Mujeres de Colores: Hispanic/Mexican Heritage Mural

Hispanic/Mexican Heritage Mural through Mujeres de Colores

Brought together by chance, Betty Aragon-Mitotes community leader, and founder of Mujeres de Colores and co-founder of Museo de Las Tres Colonias in Fort Collins and our Executive Director, Jess Bean met at a viewing party for films documenting their two respective nonprofits. Betty expressed wanting to bring to life a highly visible mural depicting the beet workers whose hard work gave a foundation to Fort Collins.

Working behind the scenes Jess and the Fort Collins Mural Project were able to secure a wall and provide project management for this beautiful tribute to our Fort Collins’ Hispanic/Mexican Heritage.

Mujeres de Colores hired Mexican born artist Armando Silva who perfectly encompassed the meaning of Hispanic/Mexican Heritage to our local community. The mural fosters a relationship with the Mexican American, Hispanic immigrant community, and highlights the agriculture Betabeleros history and expands it to the current immigrant experience. This piece was celebrated and unveiled with a large turnout at the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage month: September 15th, 2023.

“Reminds us to be proud of who we are and what we represent. Whether we honor those who come before us or lay the foundation for those after us, we do it For My Family."

"Para Mi Familia is an invitation for the viewer to engage with the mural on a personal level. It is meant to provoke an intimate feeling with those that dare to dream big, sacrifice and work hard for their families. This is a concept that is universal to the human experience, but the placement of the phrase at Los Tarascos acts as an introduction to a specific story. Familia is who we choose to stand next to and love throughout good times and hardships. Para Mi Familia also asks us to think about our ancestors and our future gente. This is an ofrenda to our community, to our familia. Let this mural be a checkpoint in time and a reminder of why we do what we do."
